General FAQs

Spaying and Neutering

Q: Will spaying/neutering cause my pet to get fat?

A: Weight is controlled by diet and exercise.

Q: My kids want to experience the "miracle of birth", isn't that a good thing?

A: Remind your children there are many animals without homes already. Consider alternatives - fostering an expectant pet at the SPCA or watching a movie. Complications with delivery may prove to be dangerous or even fatal to your beloved pet. Expense associated with an emergency caesarian or other veterinary intervention may be in excess of $1000.

Q: Is it better for my dog to have one litter before being spayed?

A: No. Spaying before the first heat is most desirable to virtually eliminate the risk of breast cancer.
